Acupuncture for Babies and Children - Shonishin

What is Shonishin?

Shonishin is a non-invasive form of acupuncture massage developed specifically for babies and children. It originated in Japan in the 17th century. Shonishin (literally translated it means sho –little, ni - children, shin – needle) focuses on gentle specialized, non-inserted treatment techniques that children find much more acceptable than normal acupuncture needles.

Shonishin consists of light tapping or rubbing along the acupuncture meridians. Because children are quite sensitive to change and have a lot of energy, shonishin is extremely effective at restoring their health. It is a very gentle technique and can be a highly effective treatment for many childhood illnesses.

The Treatment

At the initial consultation, which lasts about an hour a medical history and discussion of symptoms will take place. I will then take the child’s pulse and feel his or her abdomen to help with diagnosis. Initial treatment consists of a gentle massage using shonishin “tools”. The treatment is administered quickly usually within 15 to 20 minutes and is most effective when given frequently until the symptoms are alleviated. If appropriate at later treatments parents will learn to given shonishin massage at home (a silver spoon makes an effective shonishin tool.)

Your Therapist - Angela Bushaway

Angela Bushaway is an acupuncturist and shiatsu practitioner. She originally trained as a teacher but has always been fascinated in all things oriental. This led her to a career change, studying and practising shiatsu. She has a Diploma from the European Shiatsu School, based in Marlborough, Wilts and for acupuncture, she completed a 3 year degree course at the Traditional College of Acupuncture near Warwick. She is also a Reiki Master.

"I have a holistic approach to health and well-being and provide treatments to a broad spectrum of people, from children to the elderly. I am particularly interested in women's health, especially infertility, pregnancy and small children. I feel it is important to keep my skills up to date and attend post-graduate courses regularly."

She donates her time and skills to local hospices where she works with both patients and staff. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and the Shiatsu Society.
