A Short Guide to Using Essential Oils

A short guide to restoring physical and emotional balance through the use of Essential Oils

Essential oils can be said to be truly holistic in their action. They can have a profound action on the body, promoting physical, psychological and spiritual well-being.  There are various ways that we can apply essential oils – both for therapeutic benefit and pleasure. The following methods are the safest and most commonly used. Drops of either the individual oils or the blends can be used.

Aromatherapy massage

The application of the essential oils is enhanced by the therapeutic action of massage.  Molecules of the oil can permeate through the skin and so enter the bloodstream and here they can exert their influence on body chemistry. At the same time, inhalation and smell affect those parts of our brain responsible for  memory and emotions. Aromatherapy massage is good for muscular aches and pains, nervous exhaustion and anxiety.

6 drops in 20 mls of suitable carrier oil. Lower dilution for children, babies & the elderly.

Vaporisation

Essential oils are added to water in a burner or electric vaporiser. This method is especially good for mood enhancement and lifting the spirit. Change oils to have the desired effect. Electric vaporisers are particularly useful to disinfect the air, improve breathing or as an insect repellent.

2-10 drops in water or vaporiser according to room size or type of vaporiser.

Bath

Add drops of essential oil or infused bath blend to running water, perhaps the ultimate ways to relax. Very beneficial for nervous tension and insomnia. Sore, aching joints and muscles respond better to a morning bath.  In respect of babies and toddlers, oils should be diluted in a carrier or full cream milk.

4-6 drops for an adult, 1-2 drops for elderly and children.

Steam inhalation

The traditional method of adding essential oils to a bowl of boiling water and breathing in the vapour with a towel draped over the head. This can be very effective for sinus problems, coughs, colds, sore throat. Care should be taken if asthmatic.

2-3 drops in small bowl.

Compress

Add essential oil to a small bowl of hot or cold water as appropriate. Place a cloth on the water, wring out and apply to affected area. Hot compresses are suitable for cramping pains and cold for burning pains and swollen parts.

3-5 drops in a small bowl.

Blends, ointments and creams

Essential oils can be added to base creams, carrier oils or used as floral waters.  Used for bruises, sprains, painful joints or to palliate skin conditions. Floral waters are particularly good for cosmetic uses such as toners.

5-10 drops in 50g jar or 100ml. Lower dilution for skin conditions
