What is Indian Head Massage?Traditional Indian Head Massage is an ancient therapy which has been practised in India for more than 4000 years. This style of head massage has been passed down through generations and is used in the home and in barber shops across India. In the UK, we practice the European interpretation of this Ayurvedic healing system, extending it to include the face, neck, shoulders, upper back and arms. Indian Head Massage helps to melt away tension that we store in our upper body, allowing us to clear our minds, calm our worries and release pressure. The massage can be both invigorating and also relaxing, depending on what your body needs at that time. The experience is what makes it special. Through the use of scents, massage and music you allow yourself to enter into a place where you can re-balance, re-focus and relax. What are the benefits? This massage can have an effect on all aspects of your well-being, at all levels. We can take from this massage what we need – that may be to help improve a physical problem or to enjoy a sense of calm and peacefulness during a busy week. Some of the benefits may be as follows:
What happens during a treatment?Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You will be asked to remove any glasses, earrings, necklaces and ties. Hair should be loose and not highly styled or have hair ornaments in as these will need to be removed. This massage takes place in a comfortable chair either fully or partially clothed. The clothed massage is done over light clothing (preferably a t shirt or collarless top) and without the use of oils. During use of oils, you will be asked to expose your upper back from just beneath your shoulder blades. Oils can be used on all or part of the area to be treated. A towel will be supplied to wrap around your chest area. The treatment is discreet and your comfort will be ensured at all times. The treatment begins with massage of the upper back and shoulders, then onto the upper arms, the neck, the head and the face, finishing with some gentle chakra balancing. The transition between different areas is very smooth and fluid and links together wonderfully. The massage of the head can be quite vigorous with stimulating frictions and pressures to the scalp. Other areas of the massage are smooth and gentle. However, please remember that the massage can be adjusted to your specific needs, likes and dislikes. The massage lasts about 40-45 minutes and once the massage is completed it is advisable that you rest for a few moments. Does it hurt? No, the massage should not hurt. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable with any pressure, please talk to your therapist and they will adjust the pressure for your next visit.
