What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine is the oldest and most universal system of medicine, and most of the world’s population still rely on herbs.

Thanks to advances in scientific research, we now know much more about the medically active constituents of plants and more and more trials are proving the value of herbal remedies.

The modern herbalist

Modern herbalists have specialist university training which combines orthodox medical knowledge and skills with scientific understanding of plant medicine.

Herbalists consider good nutrition fundamental to good health and they are trained to offer nutritional advice.

Through case history and examination, a herbalist will seek to ascertain and treat the underlying causes of your condition, using herbs and nutrition to help the body to heal itself.

What conditions can a herbalist treat?

Any conditions you might take to your GP.  Herbalists are trained to recognise when a condition should be referred for further investigation.

  • Hormonal problems,
  • Joint problems,
  • Cardiovascular conditions - such as poor circulation, high blood pressure (hypertension), varicose veins, haemorrhoids etc.,
  • Depression, fatigue, stress and anxiety,
  • Weight problems,
  • Insomnia,
  • Urinary problems,
  • Skin problems,
  • Allergies,
  • Respiratory problems,
  • Poor immunity and auto-immune conditions.

There are many other conditions not listed, which herbalists are able to treat.

What happens at a consultation?

Herbalists consider symptoms of disease to be a reflection of your overall state of health, thus, a detailed history will be taken during the first consultation.  Appropriate physical examinations may be performed and your pulse and blood pressure will be taken.

Safety

Herbs are a very safe form of medicine when prescribed by a qualified herbalist.  Herbalists are well informed about interactions between herbs, drugs and supplements.

Only premium quality herbs which are constantly monitored for consistency and purity are used.

Herbal medicine is great!

Whether you are looking for an alternative, or for medicine to complement your orthodox treatment, herbs are a good choice:

  • Side effects are minimal
  • You will be listened to and treatment will be tailored to your personal needs
  • Underlying causes, as well as symptoms are assessed and treated.
  • Treatment is really effective - by itself or alongside orthodox medication.
