What is Craniosacral Therapy? With its roots in the early days of Osteopathy, Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful form of bodywork. Due to the non-manipulative, non-invasive nature of Craniosacral Therapy it is suitable for people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. This also means that craniosacral therapy can be beneficial for almost any condition including acutely painful or chronic ones, as well as during pregnancy. How does Craniosacral therapy work?Craniosacral therapy began in the USA during the 1900s when an osteopath, William Garner Sutherland, noticed subtle rhythmic patterns when working with his clients. Sutherland found that these rhythms are fundamental to health and can be perceived in every cell of the body. The subtle motions of the fluids, tissues and bones provide a great deal of information about the health and functioning of the body. A Craniosacral Therapist is able to ‘listen’ to the body and the rhythms which are present. The information gained about how the body is functioning enables areas of stress strain, and congestion to be identified. Restoration of movement and function to these areas often resolves long standing health issues on both a physical and emotional level. Is it suitable for babies and children?Yes. Due to the gentle, non-manipulative nature of the therapy it is very appropriate for babies and children. A difficult, stressful or prolonged pregnancy or birth can be traumatic for a baby, especially if medical assistance is required. It is likely that many common infant problems have their roots in these stresses and Craniosacral Therapy can often rapidly resolve many of these conditions. For example: Colic, sleeping problems, constant crying, feeding and sucking problems, restlessness and irritability. Craniosacral Therapy is also beneficial for older children and toddlers as it can help resolve specific conditions and also help with the inevitable ups, downs, knocks and tumbles of childhood. What happens during a treatment?Apart from the removal of shoes, clients remain fully clothed during Craniosacral Treatments. Adults and older children will usually be treated lying on the treatment table. The way babies and children are treated is flexible. Babies are usually treated while they lie in the arms of their parent. Toddlers and older children can also be treated in this way but are often treated while they play or read. What can I expect from a treatment?During a treatment the therapist will make light contact by gently placing their hands on different areas of the body. Although contact is likely on the head and the base of the spine, it may also be made with other areas of the body, with a session often starting at the shoulders or feet. Clients describe Craniosacral Treatments in different ways but often say that there is a deep sense of relaxation and peace during a treatment. Sensations such as tingling, heat or pulsation are also commonly felt. All these signs are positive and evidence of the body’s healing process in action.
